Saumalaakso – Use of durable materials in sealing
Regular maintenance of element joints extends the life cycle of facades. At the same time, it prevents moisture damage, lowers heating costs, improves indoor air quality, increases living comfort and improves the appearance of the building. Saumalaakso uses durable Illbruck’s sealing materials complied with ISO14025 standard.
In general the impact of resealing in due time is greater than the impact of this single planet act. If resealing is done in time and that reduces the need to use pristine concrete to renovate facades the impact can be substantial. However the sealing materials are only a small portion of the environmental footprint of a building, therefore the act of renovating rather the renewing is the clue to this act.
The drive to use environmentally friendly materials is admirable and should be shared throughout the whole construction industry. Therefore being a frontrunner and showing example to the industry and customers is important.
Purpose
Regular maintenance of element joints extends the life cycle of facades. Re-sealing should be planned after the old joints have cracked or if the joints begin to come off completely.
Timely sealing becomes significantly less expensive than extensive water leak repair. It also prevents moisture damage, lowers heating costs, improves indoor air quality, increases living comfort and improves the appearance of the building.
Saumalaakso encourages its customers to use environmentally friendly materials and raw materials in their sealing work, which means that future generations have also been taken into account in material choices.
Results
The most typical Saumalaakso re-sealing site is a two-story five-storey apartment building.
Extensive sealing of the entire property is carried out at approximately 200 sites each year. There are about 1000 rm (running meters) of replaceable seams per site. About 210 to 250 ml (0.2 to 0.23 kg / rm) of material is consumed per meter.
In 2021, Illbruck’s durable sealing materials have been used in approximately 40% of the cases in the Saumalaakso sealing work, meaning the use of 16,000 kg of durable material at our sites.
Implementation
Saumalaakso strives to follow environmentally friendly procedures in its operations and to continuously improve its practices in order to achieve more ecological solutions.
Saumalaakso demands from the material suppliers the best products on the market, reliable delivery security and the values of sustainable development.
