Encore – Waste management transportation by biogas trucks
Some of Encore’s Environmental Services waste management transports run on biogas made from biowaste. The Group ‘s subsidiary Hämeen Kuljetuspiste introduced two gas cars in the spring of 2020.
Encore’s movement to utilize biogas from waste to fuel the cars could be a great example of other similar companies that could join the general move towards a green, clean, and waste-free economy, for better life quality in the cities we live in.
This Planet act demonstrates how in renewing of equipment a company is able to opt for new products that help reduce CO2 emissions of its operations. In addition, the implementation has been designed so that biowaste of customers is turned into biogas and this way circular practices are introduced to the value chain. This act is replicaple and can be utilized across several industry sectors.
Turning waste to biogas, fueling waste management transport, while creating a local circular economy, is a road sign by Encore in the right direction of travel. Reducing the carbon intensity of transport fuels is a big planet act opportunity, as nearly a quarter of total energy-related C02 emissions globally comes from transport.

Purpose
The recycling of Encore Environmental Services and the extra materials generated in the operations of the customers of the waste management service can be utilized as materials or energy as ecologically as possible. For years, Encore has been optimizing its customers’ waste load weights and emptying intervals so that shipments are as full as possible. Avoiding unnecessary driving helps control both transportation costs and the carbon footprint. Transporting waste with biogas instead of conventional fuel reduces the carbon footprint of transport by up to 90 percent.
Results
Using biogas in cars instead of conventional fuel reduces the car’s CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent. With the two biogas trucks at Hämeen Kuljetuspiste, this means a total of 70 tons less CO2 emissions per year.
In Lahti, a garbage truck running on gas operates in the city center, where a lot of people move while driving the car. Thanks to biogas, the car’s local emissions are very low. It is driven an average of 40,000 kilometers per year. The demountable truck driven in the Helsinki metropolitan area has a wide operating range and an average of 70,000-80,000 driven kilometers per year.
Implementation
As the acquisition of new transport equipment became topical, the environmental impacts of the different options were compared. The purchase of biogas cars was decided because compared to previous diesel vehicles, transport by gas cars emits up to 90% less CO2.
Biogas is produced, for example, from biowaste from Encore Environmental Services’ customers. When a waste truck runs on biogas made from biowaste, a domestic circular economy chain is realized.
